Struggling homeowners are been warned about falling prey to sell-and-rent-back deals after the Office of Fair Trading called for better regulation of the industry.
Companies were accused by the OFT of preying on vulnerable homeowners by misrepresenting the schemes, which are often sold as a solution to debt and increasing mortgage repayments.
The report found that many plans were being mis-sold, with many customers being forced out of their home after less than 12 months despite being told that they could remain in the property long-term or even for life.
