The cost of motoring became considerably cheaper over the weekend as the price of fuel dipped below £1 per litre for the first time since December.

Supermarket giants ASDA and Morrisons gave motorists some rest bite by dropping the price of unleaded to 99.9p on Thursday, with several competitors following suit over the weekend.

Shell, BP, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Texaco were amongst the retailers to drop prices over the weekend in light of a recent drop in oil prices.

Oil companies had so far been reluctant to pass on a recent drop in oil prices, citing the weakening of the dollar against the pound as a reason for forecourt prices remaining high but a further drop in prices finally took fuel prices below the £1 mark.

At the time of writing, Brent Crude was trading at $71.81 per barrel, compared with more than $140 a barrel back in July.

The drop was backed up by a further 2p reduction today by Morrisons, making them the cheapest fuel retailer in the UK with fuel being sold at 98.9p on many of its forecourts.

The drop brings the UK average fuel price down to 102.8p for unleaded whilst the cheapest diesel in the UK can now be bought for 109.9p, with a UK average price of 114.4p.
