The Ministry of Justice has issued a series of online guides and videos to offer advice to homeowners facing repossession.
The guides, found at www.direct.gov.uk, offers advice and guidance on the repossession process, right from the first arrears up to what homeowners can expect at a court hearing.

The advice has been released after the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) predicted that as many as 65,000 homes could be repossessed in 2009 as a result of mortgage arrears, fuelled largely by increasing unemployment.

"The Government has taken considerable steps to ensure people struggling to pay their rent or mortgage get the help they need to stay in their homes," said Justice Minister Bridget Prentice.

"Mortgage repossession figures released earlier this month show that the number of people facing repossession has considerably reduced since this time last year, but we're not complacent."

The number of homes repossessed by lenders in the UK did fall by 10% in the three months from April to June, compared with the previous three months, according to the CML although the figure of 11,400 home repossessions was still up 14% compared with the same period the previous year.

And homelessness charity Shelter has warned that a second wave of home repossessions is likely when interest rates rise and as rising unemployment continues, in the coming months, affecting homeowner’s ability to keep up with their regular monthly repayments.
